The 2024 BAFTA Film Awards will broadcast on BBC One and stream on iPlayer and BritBox on Sunday night, starting at 7 p.m. local time.

BritBox recently inked a deal with BAFTA to stream a simulcast of the BAFTA Film Awards through 2025. Hosted by David Tennant, this year’s ceremony will take place at the Royal Festival Hall in London’s Southbank Centre.

Bafta - which stands for the British Academy of Film and Television - is an arts charity that champions UK talent on both the big and small screen. Its annual film awards ceremony is one of the UK's most prestigious cultural events, honouring both international and homegrown talent. The awards aren't quite the Oscars but they're definitely up there.

“Oppenheimer” led the nominations with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11. “Oppenheimer” was nominated for best film, director for Christopher Nolan and lead actor for Cillian Murphy, along with supporting nods for Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. “Poor Things” received a best film nomination as well, and lead actress for Emma Stone.

This event is not just a celebration of cinematic achievements but also a precursor to the Oscars, offering hints about potential winners for the upcoming March 10 ceremony. The BAFTAs this year are honored to have Prince William attend in his role as president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, though Kate, the Princess of Wales, will be absent as she recovers from recent surgery.

Adding a touch of charm and wit to the proceedings will be the event's host, David Tennant, widely known for his role in "Doctor Who."

"Oppenheimer" by Christopher Nolan and Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things" are leading the charge this year, holding 13 and 11 nominations, respectively.

These films are not only in the spotlight for the BAFTAs but are also significant contenders for the Oscars, with "Oppenheimer" matching its BAFTA nominations at the Academy Awards. What time does the BAFTA Awards begin?

Notable snubs include “Barbie” not earning nominations in the best film or director categories. The box-office hit earned only five nods — tied with “Saltburn” from Emerald Fennell, who also missed out on a directing nod — after landing 15 categories on the longlist. Additionally, Golden Globe winner Lily Gladstone did not receive a nomination for best actress, nor did Martin Scorsese in the director category for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Five-time Oscar nominee “American Fiction” landed only one nod for adapted screenplay.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” tied with “The Zone of Interest” at nine nominations. “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers” and “Maestro” earned seven nominations each, with “All of Us Strangers” following with six nods.

The ceremony will also include a performance from Sophie Ellis-Bextor, whose 23-year-old song “Murder on the Dancefloor” was featured in the memorable final scene of “Saltburn.”

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, about the life of the man who helped develop the atomic bomb, is leading the charge with 13 nominations including best film, best actor (Cillian Murphy) and best supporting actress (Emily Blunt).

British-born filmmaker Nolan is favourite to pick up best director. Hard to believe given his back catalogue - which includes Dunkirk, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises - but this will be his first Bafta win if he triumphs at the weekend.

If, as widely expected, Oppenheimer's Robert Downey Jr picks up the award for best supporting actor, it will mark his second Bafta win - a whopping 31 years after collecting last for best actor in Chaplin back in 1993.
